1900 – The will of George Davey Bragg
This is the last will and testament of me George Davey Bragg of Birmingham in the county of Warwick wine merchant
In the first place I direct that all my just debts and funeral and testamentary expenses be fully paid
I bequeath the following charitable legacies free from legacy duty namely
to the General Hospital at Birmingham aforesaid the sum of one hundred pounds
to the Queen’s Hospital at Birmingham aforesaid the sum of one hundred pounds
to the Birmingham Dispensary at Birmingham aforesaid the sum of one hundred pounds
And I declare that the receipt of the respective treasurers of the aforesaid institutions shall be a sufficient discharge for the said legacies respectively
And I declare that the said charitable legacies shall be paid free from legacy duty and that the same and the legacy duty thereon respectively shall be paid exclusively out of such part of my personal estate as may be legally bequeathed for charitable purposes and in priority to all other payments thereout
I bequeath the following legacies namely
to my niece Mary Elizabeth Norris (formerly Mary Elizabeth Turner) widow of the late Thomas Norris late clerk in holy orders the sum of four thousand pounds
to my niece Rosa Heaton (formerly Rosa Turner) the wife of George Heaton of Handsworth in the county of Stafford the sum of four thousand pounds
to my nephew Arthur John Turner the sum of four thousand pounds
to my niece Emily Hughes (formerly Emily Turner) the wife of WR Hughes the sum of four thousand pounds
to my great nieces Ada Turner and Florence Turner (the daughters of my deceased nephew Frederick Turner) the sum of two thousand pounds each
to my great nephew George Turner (son of my deceased nephew George Turner) now residing in the Dominion of Canada the sum of one thousand pounds
and to my great niece Agnes Middleton (daughter of my deceased nephew George Turner formerly Agnes Turner wife of ____ Middleton) the sum of one thousand pounds
And I declare that in case of the death of any or either of the before mentioned legatees in my lifetime the legacy given to him or her shall sink into and form part of my residuary estate
I give devise and bequeath all my real and personal estate whatsoever and wheresoever not hereby otherwise disposed of subject to the payment of my funeral and testamentary expenses and debts and the legacies payable under or by virtue of this my will or any codicil hereto unto my great nephew Arthur Turner of Birmingham aforesaid solicitor (son of my deceased nephew George Turner) absolutely for his own use and benefit
Provided always that in case my said great nephew the said Arthur Turner shall die in my lifetime then I give devise and bequeath all the real and personal estate so devised and bequeathed to him as aforesaid unto all his children who shall attain the age of twenty one years in equal shares or if there shall be but one such child the whole to be for that one child
And I appoint my great nephew the said Arthur Turner sole executor of this my will
And I hereby revoke all prior wills and testamentary dispositions
In witness whereof I the said George Davey Bragg have to this my last will and testament written on this and one preceding sheet of paper set my hand this eighth day of April one thousand eight hundred and ninety one George Davey Bragg
Signed by the said George Davey Bragg as his last will and testament in the presence of us both being present at the same time who in his presence and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses

This is a codicil to the last will and testament of me George Davey Bragg of the city of Birmingham wine merchant which will bears date the eighth day of April one thousand eight hundred and ninety one
I give and bequeath to my housekeeper Emma Usborn a legacy of four thousand pounds to be paid to her free of legacy duty
And in all other respects I confirm my said will
In witness whereof I have set my hand to this codicil to my said will the twenty seventh day of October one thousand eight hundred and ninety four George Davey Bragg

On the fourth day of April 1900 probate of this will (with a codicil) was granted at Lichfield to Arthur Turner the great nephew (son of testator’s deceased nephew George Turner) the sole executor
